Our History
CBWW was established in 1988
under the auspices of the National Black Women's Health Project (now
called the Black Women’s Health Imperative), a health advocacy and
self-help organization (Byllye Avery, founder). Conceived as a
program that would one day be independent of the NBWHP, in 1996 the
Center was incorporated as a nonprofit corporation. Cheryl Y.
Boykins became the leading force behind the Center gaining its
501(c) (3) status and became the Center’s first President/Chief
Executive Officer.
Over the years, CBWW has not only
garnered the support of the families served, but has become known
among health and social services agencies as a popular referral for
women and their families. Furthermore, CBWW has become a
multi-purpose self-help center and an important resource for
Atlanta’s communities.
