The Center for Black Women’s Wellness (CBWW) is a community-based nonprofit organization that provides free and low-cost services to empower underserved women and their families, toward physical, mental and economic wellness. CBWW offers the following comprehensive services: women’s health, primary care and mental health services; health education and promotion programs; perinatal case management services; and financial literacy and self-employment training.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Community Health Specialist/Medical Assistant provides clinical and administrative support to Nurse Practitioners and patients throughout the CBWW Wellness Clinic patient journey.
This position supports patient intake, clinical preparation, phlebotomy, laboratory specimen management, care coordination, EMR documentation, and overall clinic operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Greet, register, and prepare patients for clinical visits.
- Verify demographics, consent, insurance, and other required patient information.
- Obtain and document vital signs, chief complaints, medications, allergies, and patient history as directed.
- Assist Nurse Practitioners with examinations and approved procedures.
- Perform venipuncture and finger-stick blood collection.
- Collect, label, process, store, and prepare specimens for transport.
- Verify patient identifiers and provider-authorized laboratory orders.
- Prepare, clean, disinfect, and stock examination rooms.
- Document authorized information accurately within the EMR.
- Route laboratory and diagnostic information according to established workflow.
- Conduct provider-directed follow-up related to labs, referrals, prescriptions, and appointments.
- Assist patients with portal access and navigation.
- Support referral coordination and efforts to prevent patients from becoming lost to follow-up.
- Assist with insurance eligibility, sliding fee, charity-care, and patient intake documentation when assigned.
- Support scheduling, phones, scanning, faxing, and other clinic administrative functions.
- Participate in clinic meetings, training, quality improvement, and community outreach activities.
Clinical Order Responsibility
The Medical Assistant supports laboratory collection and processing only under provider-authorized orders.
Medical Assistants are not authorized to independently:
- Order laboratory or diagnostic testing.
- Add additional tests to an existing order.
- Change or remove provider orders.
- Select testing based on personal clinical judgment.
Order discrepancies must be escalated to the licensed provider before the specimen or requisition is processed.
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION & EXPERIENCE
Medical Assistant and Phlebotomy certification required
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated venipuncture skills
- Clinical community health experience
- Strong communication, organizational and patient services skills
- Ability to maintain HIPAA confidentiality and follow clinical safety standards
QUALIFICATIONS
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Clinical community health experience
- Basic computer and EMR skills and experience
BENEFITS
This is a full-time position not to exceed 30 hours per week. Our clinic operates in-person Monday-Thursday with remote administrative and operational work required on Fridays.
